23-year-old killed in Midlands-area SUV crash Sunday morning, SC Highway Patrol says
One person was killed in a Sunday morning crash near the Midlands, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The single-vehicle collision occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on Barrineau Road, Cpl. Sonny Collins said. That is about 70 miles east of Columbia.
The driver of a 2008 GMC SUV was heading north when the vehicle ran off the road, according to Collins.
The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was killed when the SUV hit a ditch and smashed into a tree, Collins said.
The Clarendon County Coroner’s Office identified Caleb Floyd, a 23-year-old from Lake City, as the driver killed.
There were no other people in the SUV during the wreck, according to Highway Patrol.
“Caleb Floyd died at the scene from multiple blunt force trauma to the head and body,” Coroner Bucky Mock said in a news release.
Information on what caused the crash was not available, but it remains under investigation by Highway Patrol.
Another fatality was reported by Highway Patrol Sunday morning following a Laurens County collision where the driver was also not wearing a seat belt.
As of Nov. 25, nearly 900 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2019, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those 877 deaths, 559 people had access to seat belts, but 266 were not restrained, the Department of Public Safety reported.
