Newborn baby found in trash bag at SC college, student arrested
A 19-year-old Claflin University student has been identified as the mother of a newborn baby found near a dumpster at the university’s Orangeburg campus Wednesday morning.
News outlets are reporting that Amber Fulton of Kingstree, South Carolina, faces charges of unlawful conduct toward a child and attempted murder. Fulton was taken to a medical center for evaluation.
The Orangeburg Department of Public Safety confirmed employees at the university discovered a baby boy alive in a trash bag, the Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported.
The baby’s condition was unknown late Wednesday.
The newspaper reported the baby was transported to a hospital and police are investigating.
Under S.C.’s Daniel’s Law, infants up to 60 days old can be legally abandoned at a safe haven.
Safe havens are defined as hospitals, hospital outpatient facilities, law enforcement agencies, fire stations, emergency medical services stations or houses of worship while staff are working.
