Police: Argument led to wreck that killed woman and boy in N.C.
Police said an argument led to a single-car wreck that killed a woman and a 6-year-old boy on East Independence Boulevard in Charlotte on Monday night.
Killed in the wreck were the driver of the speeding car, Vanessa Annette Adams, 33, and Gianni Espinoza.
Police said Gianni’s mother, front-seat passenger Crystal Marie Day, 33, caused the wreck when she grabbed the steering wheel while arguing with Adams. That caused the westbound 1999 Toyota Solara to veer to the right, strike a guardrail and overturn on the road, police said.
Police charged Day with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of child neglect. She will be taken to the Mecklenburg County jail once she is released from Carolinas Medical Center, police said. Day was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Neither Adams nor Day had seat belts on, and Gianni was not properly restrained in a child seat, police said.
The wreck happened shortly before 9 p.m. in the 7500 block of East Independence Boulevard.
Police said they do not know whether alcohol also contributed to the wreck.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit at 704-336-2677.
