A thwarted home invasion turned potentially deadly when the suspect climbed into his truck and started chasing the homeowners around the yard, according to investigators in North Carolina.

It happened April 14 at a farm in the Morven community, and the pickup was halted when it collided with a stump, the Anson County Sheriff’s Office said in a May 5 news release.

“Anson County Emergency Communications received a 911 call reporting an active home invasion. ... While deputies were en route, the caller advised that her fiancé had confronted the suspect and forced him out of the residence at gunpoint,” the sheriff’s office reported.

“Victims reported that after being chased from the home, the suspect attempted to run them over with his truck. The suspect subsequently struck a stump in the yard, disabling the vehicle, and fled the scene on foot.”

The couple described the man as 6-feet, 4-inches tall and around 450-pounds, and a man fitting that description was found “in the immediate area,” officials said.

“Upon contact, the suspect actively resisted and fought with deputies as they attempted to take him into custody,” the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect, identified as Terry Caudle of Pageland, South Carolina, was also “extremely volatile and disruptive” during jail intake, court records show.

Caudle, 40, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and breaking and entering to terrorize, officials said.

Investigators did not release details of a motive, but court documents report Cauldle intended “to terrorize an occupant” of the home.

Morven is about a 60-mile drive southeast from uptown Charlotte.
