A 22-year-old was driving to work when he died in a head-on crash in North Carolina, officials said.

The man’s boss was following him before his Ford Fusion crossed the center line of the road and veered into oncoming traffic on Monday, March 21, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Officials said the 22-year-old worker, who had been driving north, ran into a box truck as it traveled south.

The Ford driver died at the scene of the Randolph County crash. He was identified in a news release as Jakob Jordan Stanley from the nearby Sophia area.

The driver of the box truck wasn’t injured, and Stanley’s boss wasn’t involved in the crash, Master Trooper Brian K. Martin told McClatchy News in an email.

“Investigators are still looking into reasons why Stanley crossed left of center,” state troopers said in their news release. “Impairment is not suspected to be a contributing factor at this point in the investigation.”

The N.C. State Highway Patrol responded at about 5 a.m. to the crash on Unity Street, near the intersection with East Sunrise Avenue and roughly 20 miles southwest of Greensboro. Officials said the street was shut down for almost four hours before reopening for traffic.
