Daily cases fall again from near record high
At least 125,219 people in North Carolina have tested positive for the coronavirus, and 1,969 have died, according to state health officials.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services on Sunday reported an additional 1,341 cases of the virus, down from 1,730 new cases Saturday and 1,954 Friday. It marked the third consecutive day daily reported cases dropped after reaching a near-record high on Thursday.
The health department on Sunday also reported five additional deaths after reporting 40 Saturday.
More than 1.8 million tests for COVID-19 have been completed in North Carolina. About 8% of all tests were positive, the health department reported Sunday.
Hospitalizations drop
Reported hospitalizations haven’t dropped below 1,000 since July 7 or below 1,100 since July 19, according to health department data. Data on hospitalizations is preliminary and can be updated.
Sunday’s count was based on data from 85% of hospitals.
Isaias and coronavirus
Isaias, which was downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm Saturday afternoon, is quickly approaching North Carolina, becoming the first major storm the state has seen during the coronavirus pandemic.
With some mandatory evacuation orders in place ahead of the storm Monday, state leaders are urging coastal residents to stay with family or friends who live further inland. Staying at a shelter should be a last resort, they said.
