‘Split-second decision’ leads to $1.3 million jackpot win in North Carolina
A man’s “split-second decision” led to a big jackpot win in North Carolina, officials say.
“I’m still having a hard time believing it,” George Robble said of his $1.3 million prize, according to a news release the N.C. Education Lottery published Monday.
Robble’s good fortune started when he was doing a favor, the release said. He went to the Roadrunner Markets convenience store in Waynesville so his wife could play the lottery, according to officials.
That’s where Robble saw a sign for a jackpot prize and decided to try his luck, too.
“I saw the amount that was up on the light up sign, and I said, ‘Oh, I’ll play it,’ ” he told the N.C. Education Lottery.
He bought tickets for the Carolina Cash 5 drawing and checked his numbers the following morning, officials say. It turns out, he snagged a $1,327,872 prize, the fifth-highest amount ever won in the game, according to the news release.
“I thought, ‘Oh my god’ and then I went and woke up my wife and told her,” Robble said in the news release. “Neither one of us could believe it.”
After taxes, Robble gets $939,470, officials say. He and his wife plan to put the money toward kitchen remodeling, according to the lottery.
Waynesville is in Haywood County, roughly 30 miles southwest of Asheville.
