Boy, 7, shot while sleeping in his bed early Wednesday in Charlotte, CMPD says

A child was shot and wounded while sleeping in his bed Wednesday, according to authorities. Police say someone fired a bullet into the boy’s north Charlotte home, injuring the 7-year-old.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department investigators say it happened around 12:55 a.m. in the 12500 block of Dervish Lane, which is near the Highland Creek area north of Interstate 485. The child was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he was being treated. He was hit in his shoulder, police said.

At a press conference on Wednesday, CMPD Maj. Allan Rutledge said the child’s home was likely targeted in the shooting.

“We don’t believe this to be a random act whatsoever,” he said.

According to a CMPD police report, there were 11 people inside the home including 6 adults and 5 children between the ages of 2 and 7.

Part of the home and a car were also damaged by a bullets, the report states.

Tips in the case can be offered via Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or by calling 911, CMPD says.
