Uber driver charged after passenger ejected from car and killed in east Charlotte crash
An Uber driver is facing charges after his passenger was killed in an east Charlotte crash Saturday afternoon, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.
The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on East W.T. Harris Boulevard near Delta Lake Drive, according to a CMPD news release.
At the scene, officers located a female, who had been ejected from the car, lying unresponsive in the roadway, police said. The female, identified as Konjit Yohannes Frangulis, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The driver, Geoffrey Douglas Adams, is employed by Uber, police said. He was traveling with Frangulis as his fare, according to the release.
Police said Adams, 57, was driving a 2014 BMW 535i south on East W.T. Harris Boulevard when he crossed a concrete median into opposing lanes and ran off the road onto the grass shoulder, hit a utility pole, rotated and crashed into two trees.
The car then re-entered northbound lanes before stopping, police said.
Frangulis was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Adams, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to a nearby hospital for minor injuries, according to the news release.
Police said Adams was not impaired. He has been charged with reckless driving and misdemeanor death by vehicle, according to the release.
