North Carolina man stopped for goulash fixings — and left with a $1 million jackpot
Lottery officials in North Carolina were searching Monday for the owner of a $1 million ticket.
By Tuesday, they had a winner.
Edward Snyder of Davidson claimed the $1.06 million Cash 5 jackpot, according to the N.C. Education Lottery. He ended up with $752,189 after tax withholdings.
“I’ve been an operation manager for over 20 years,” Snyder said in a news release. “I’m close to retirement, but this is going to move it even closer. This is wild. I still can’t believe this is happening.”
Snyder had stopped at Food Lion in Mooresville — about 20 miles north of Charlotte — to pick up ingredients for goulash on his way home from a bit of holiday traveling, officials said.
He was “feeling lucky” and also bought a Cash 5 ticket for Sunday’s drawing, but didn’t initially check the results.
Lottery officials issued a news release Monday asking players to “check your tickets” after no one claimed the jackpot.
The winning numbers were 2-7-13-34-39.
“I had to look at the ticket at least 15 times before I believed it,” Snyder said. “I texted my wife, and she didn’t believe it either.”
Snyder had a one in 962,598 chance of winning, the Charlotte Observer reported.
