He used $5,000 in fake coupons at an NC grocery store, but now he may pay big time
A North Carolina man is accused of using more than $5,000 in fake coupons at a Lowes Foods grocery store.
Dylan Adams, 35, of Randleman, was arrested this month after Asheboro police seized thousands of counterfeit coupons, USPS mailing materials, computers and a printer from his home, according to the Coupon Information Center.
The center is a not-for-profit association of consumer product manufacturers that helps police investigate coupon fraud.
Adams was charged with 14 counts of felony obtaining property by false pretense, court records show. He is free pending a June 6 trial.
The manager of the store on West Dixie Drive notified police in November that the store lost about $5,365 because of the counterfeit coupons, the (Asheboro) Courier-Tribune reported at the time.
Police are not saying what items were bought with the fake coupons, but that the purchases were made over about a month beginning last August, according to the Coupon Information Center.
A Lowes Foods spokeswoman declined to comment about the case when reached by the Observer on Thursday.
Police are continuing to investigate the production of the bogus coupons at Adams’ home, Raleigh ABC-TV affiliate WTVD reported on Thursday.
