Loris voters opted for a new mayor Tuesday as the northern Horry County city continues to grow at a rapid clip.

Unofficial results show council member Michael E. Suggs defeating incumbent mayor Todd Harrelson by a 25-vote margin: 263 to 238. It was not immediately known whether a run-off would be needed.

Loris, with a population approaching 3,000, has seen its rural boundaries expand over the past year as large-scale housing developments and mixed use projects take shape along its S.C. Highway 90 corridor.

Crime has also been of concern to residents, with several high-profile incidents reported over the past year.
