What you need to know before hitting the polls Saturday
Horry County Democrats get their turn to cast ballots for the party’s presidential nominee Saturday as South Carolina wraps up the “first-in-the-South” primary process.
Vying for the nomination are former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton, and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
Clinton campaigned in Myrtle Beach on Thursday -- her first and only stop in the Grand Strand area. She has maintained a strong polling lead in South Carolina since the primary season began last summer.
Sanders skipped Horry County during his campaign stops across the state, and with his polling numbers sagging more than 20 points below Clinton in numerous polls, his campaign focused on the major metropolitan areas of Columbia and Charleston in the days before the primary.
Horry County Democrats say they have been working hard to ensure a strong voter turnout through phone banks and mailings.
New York businessman Donald Trump won the South Carolina Republican primary last week and all 50 of the state’s delegate votes. In Horry County, Trump captured nearly half of all votes cast.
At stake for the Democrat candidates as well in South Carolina are 50 delegate votes, and a strong boost going into next week’s Super Tuesday contests across a dozen states.
When to vote?
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Saturday for the Democratic presidential preference primary. Voters who are waiting in line at 7 p.m. will be permitted inside the polling station to cast a ballot.
Who can vote?
Voters may participate in only one party’s presidential preference primary, so those who participated in the Feb. 20 Republican primary are not permitted to vote in the Democratic primary. The deadline for voter registration was Jan. 27.
What will you need to vote?
Voters are required to produce photo identification at the polling place. Acceptable photo identification cards include a South Carolina driver’s license, an identification card issued by the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles, a S.C. voter registration card with photo, a federal military ID or a U.S. passport.
