Horry County supports naming highway after Donald Trump – on one condition
President Donald J. Trump could be a name drivers see on maps in the Myrtle Beach area.
While Horry County doesn’t have the authority to name the local portion of Interstate 73, the Transportation Commission voted to support a measure to name the highway in honor of the president on one condition: funding is secured before the end of his term.
“He seems to like his name on things, and if it makes a difference, I’m all about supporting it,” said Councilman Tom Anderson. “I’d just like to have the road paved.”
The move came after State Rep. Heather Crawford filed a bill to name the Horry County section of Interstate 73 “President Donald J. Trump Highway,” and State Rep. Russell Fry echoed his support.
“This highway strengthens hurricane evacuation routes, boosts our economy, and honors a President who put America First and delivers real results for South Carolina,” Crawford said on social media.
Through Ride IV, Horry County is committed to match $450 million for the local section of Interstate 73 as long as the road is funded to Interstate 95.
Officials hope that dedicating the new road to President Trump could bring in that funding in this administration.
“The main goal here is to see that we could get some federal funding towards the project … then additionally some state funding towards the project, then we could use our match to go towards completing the highway,” said Chairman Dennis DiSabato.
