A fire and explosion at a Staten Island shipyard on Friday injured at least 16 people, including three with serious injuries, according to the New York Fire Department.

Authorities said a call came in around 3:30 p.m. reporting two workers trapped in a confined space at the Richmond Terrace facility. Responding crews found a fire burning in the basement of a metal structure before a major explosion occurred roughly 50 minutes later as firefighters battled the blaze.

As of about 5 p.m., officials said 16 people were hurt, including two firefighters and one civilian in serious condition. The cause of the fire and explosion remains under investigation.
