Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation on Friday following her husband’s cancer diagnosis.

Abraham Williams, who accompanied Gabbard to her swearing-in ceremony at the White House in February 2025, has an “extremely rare form of bone cancer," per Gabbard’s resignation letter.

President Donald Trump posted to Truth Social that Gabbard “rightly” wanted to be with Williams, adding, “I have no doubt he will soon be better than ever.”

When Did Tulsi Gabbard and Abraham Williams Get Married?

Gabbard and Williams’ paths first crossed while Gabbard was campaigning in 2012 to join the House of Representatives. They got married three years later, in 2015.

Williams, a cinematographer, has largely stayed out of the political spotlight. His diagnosis, however, became central to Gabbard's decision to leave public service.

He appeared beside her in Instagram photos and campaign imagery years before she became the director of National Intelligence. Williams volunteered as a photographer on her congressional campaign and shot many of the images that helped introduce her to voters.

Williams shared Gabbard's love of the outdoors. The couple bonded over hikes, long walks, and even a pickup volleyball game on their first date, but it was their shared connection to the ocean that ultimately brought them closest. They own property in Leander, Texas, according to documents reviewed by Newsweek.
