The father of a teenage girl has been arrested after his daughter’s newborn was found in a Walmart bathroom, Texas police told news outlets.

Officers responded to the Walmart at about 10:20 p.m. Monday, July 14, when employees called and reported a baby girl discovered in a trash bag, the Kingsville Police Department told KRIS.

According to police, a worker was collecting trash from the bathrooms when they found the newborn, then brought it to the attention of other employees, the station reported.

Workers performed CPR on the infant until officers arrived, police said, at which point she was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, the outlet reported.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from that night and saw a teen go into a bathroom for about 40 minutes, exit, then get into a vehicle and leave the area, KIII reported. The baby was found in that bathroom 30 minutes later, police said.

The teen’s 45-year-old father was later arrested, according to the outlet.

Records show the father was booked the morning of July 15.

He was arrested on charges of abandoning or endangering a child, tampering with evidence and tampering with a witness, records show.

Kingsville is a roughly 150-mile drive southeast from San Antonio.
