A man went missing and later was found dead after trying to save a child from drowning in the Chattahoochee River, Georgia police and fire rescue officials said.

Emergency responders were called around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, about someone struggling in the water near Garrard Landing Park, according to the Roswell Police Department.

Officers learned a man had jumped into the river to save a child in distress. The child was brought to shore, but the man went under and didn’t resurface, police said.

His body was recovered about an hour into a search of the river, police said. Authorities don’t believe any criminal activity was involved.

Officials didn’t release the man’s name but said he was a friend of the child’s family, WANF reported.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed it has identified the victim but said his name won’t be released until his next of kin has been notified.

Roswell is about a 20-mile drive north from downtown Atlanta.
