Boy dies after he’s left in day care van on hot day, Texas cops say. 2 arrested
Two women have been arrested after a child left in a van died outside of a Texas day care, police say.
Officers responded to a 911 call at 4:55 p.m. Friday, June 27, when a 4-year-old boy was found “unresponsive” inside a van at The Learning Club Preschool in Brownsville, the police department said in a news release. The van belonged to the day care.
First responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene, and a death investigation was launched, according to police.
Officials later shared the boy’s name, Logan Urbina, KVEO reported.
McClatchy News reached out to the day care for comment, but nobody was answering the phone.
The temperature reached a high of 96 degrees on June 27, National Weather Service data shows. It’s unclear how hot it was in the van when Urbina was found, but even on a cool 73-degree day, the inside of a vehicle can reach 100 degrees in about 25 minutes, creating a very dangerous situation for children and pets left unattended, according to the NWS.
Two arrests have been made, according to police. A 36-year-old woman was taken into custody on June 27, and a 38-year-old woman was arrested on June 30 — and both are charged with injury to a child causing death.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” police said. “Our hearts remain with the victim’s family during this time of grief.”
The boy’s death has struck a nerve with the community more broadly, and residents have formed a memorial for him outside of the day care, leaving candles, balloons and dozens of stuffed animals, KRGV reported.
One woman at the memorial, Marcy Velez, said she’s “so sorry for the family” and felt it was important to show support for them, she told the station. She added that she’s pulled her own children out of the day care.
Brownsville is a roughly 280-mile drive southeast from San Antonio.
