A 12-year-old boy died after falling into a lake at a campground in Illinois, officials told news outlets.

Before 8 p.m. Friday, June 6, two brothers were seen near the water’s edge at Camp Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs when one of the boys slipped, authorities told WMAQ.

The younger brother was 9 years old, the outlet reported.

Witnesses said both of the children ended up in the lake, but the older brother went underwater and didn’t resurface until he was pulled to shore by people fishing nearby, WLS reported.

First responders say the boy was unresponsive when they arrived at the scene, according to the station.

The boy, later identified as Asael Gonzalez-Guel, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at 8:21 p.m., WFLD reported. His cause of death has not been released as of June 8.

Willow Springs is a roughly 20-mile drive southwest from downtown Chicago.
