Man on parole raped and killed woman, then hid her body in tote, CO officials say
A man accused of raping and killing a 27-year-old woman and then hiding her body in his garage is heading to prison, Colorado prosecutors said.
Gregory Alan Whittemore was sentenced to 70 years behind bars in connection with Allison Scarfone’s 2022 assault and death, the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said in a May 22 news release.
The sentence came after Whittemore pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault, prosecutors said.
McClatchy News couldn’t immediately find defense attorney information for him on May 23.
Whittemore met Scarfone in October 2022, when he was on parole in connection with an attempted sexual assault with use of force conviction, according to prosecutors.
Soon after, the Colorado Springs man — who was 39 at the time, according to police — lured Scarfone to his home, “where an argument ensued,” prosecutors said.
He beat her, raped her and killed her by strangling and smothering her, according to prosecutors.
“He then concealed her body in a black plastic tote in his garage,” prosecutors said, adding that police found her body “hours later.”
Scarfone’s sister said in a statement in court that Scarfone had mental health challenges, and Whittemore “found her as prey, as an easy target,” The Gazette reported. The sister said Scarfone was a loving mom and sibling, according to the outlet.
In the news release, District Attorney Michael J. Allen said “Allison Scarfone deserved to live a long and fruitful life, yet she was brutally murdered by a violent sex offender who should have been in prison on his prior five years to life sentence. The criminal justice system must do better to protect members of this community from people like this defendant.”
