Postal carrier stole mail so her husband could access bank accounts, FL cops say
A postal worker and her husband spent months bilking people out of money with the help of stolen financial statements, according to investigators in the Florida Panhandle.
Amanda McPherson, 38, and Johnathon McPherson, 27, were caught when detectives discovered seemingly unrelated cases of fraud shared the same postal routes, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office said in an April 17 news release.
The mail carrier for those routes was Amanda McPherson of Callaway, officials said.
“Investigators spoke with Amanda McPherson ... and she admitted that she had been stealing mail since the summer of 2024,” the sheriff’s office said.
“McPherson said that she would check mail that was due to be delivered on her route ... and she would target mail containing bank statements, credit cards, financial investments, retirement accounts, and other financial related mail. She said that this mail was then given to Johnathon McPherson and he would use the information ... found inside of the mail to access the mail recipients’ accounts, credit cards, etc.”
Detectives say Amanda McPherson “actively participated” in the schemes by portraying victims while “changing or modifying” the account security features, officials said.
“Johnathon McPherson’s vehicle was seized. ... During the search of his vehicle, over $27,000 in cash was found and seized. Also found inside of his vehicle and seized were numerous credit cards that were found to have been obtained in victims’ names without their knowledge,” the sheriff’s office said.
The targeted routes were in the Youngstown, Bayou George, Southport and Cedar Grove areas of Bay County, officials said. People in those areas are being told to check credit reports for questionable transactions between August 2024 and April 2025.
“Amanda McPherson was charged with ongoing scheme to defraud and multiple counts of criminal possession of personal identification information,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Johnathon McPherson was charged with ongoing scheme to defraud and multiple counts of criminal possession of personal identification information. Johnathon McPherson, who is from Jamaica, also has an ICE detainer hold placed due to his immigration status,” officials said.
Bay County is about a 100-mile drive east from Pensacola.
