A man from the Dominican Republic has come to the attention of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after authorities said he stood through a moving car’s sunroof and pointed a gun at a nearby driver, according to Florida investigators.

It happened around 5 p.m. Saturday, March 15, and ended with the suspect arrested on weapons and assault charges, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Investigators say the incident began as an Interstate 4 traffic dispute and escalated to “road rage.”

“The caller reported a passenger in a black Acura sedan stood up through the sunroof and pointed a handgun at his vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said.

“The two vehicles had been involved in a near-collision earlier while westbound on I-4 out of Daytona Beach, prompting honking and an exchange of gestures.”

A suspect was arrested around 5:15 p.m. and deputies quickly discovered he had no forms of identification.

“He indicated he entered the U.S. from the Dominican Republic by crossing the U.S.-Mexico border approximately 6 years ago,” the sheriff’s office said.

The man was later identified, and investigators discovered he is 25 and has been living in Orlando.

He was charged with “aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, improper display of a weapon, possession of marijuana, and obstruction,” the sheriff’s office said.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer was also placed on him, for possible deportation proceedings upon release from the Volusia County jail, officials said.

Daytona Beach is about a 55-mile drive northeast from Orlando.
