Trip for groceries leads to woman’s big Maryland lottery win. ‘I almost passed out’
When a Maryland woman’s relationship ended, she didn’t leave empty-handed.
More than a decade ago, she picked up a habit — one that would pay off in a big way, Maryland Lottery officials said in a March 5 news release.
She told lottery officials her ex-boyfriend enjoyed playing lottery scratch-off games.
“The boyfriend is gone, but she kept the scratch-off hobby,” lottery officials said.
So much so that it’s even part of a “routine.”
Following her method, the woman recently bought a few scratch-off tickets at an Odenton store while picking up some groceries, lottery officials said.
She waited until she returned home and put her groceries away to check the tickets, according to lottery officials.
The player scratched her $5 Cash to Go ticket and learned she had won $50,0000.
“I almost passed out,” the winner told lottery officials.
After learning of her win during a celebratory dinner, the woman’s son-in-law was inspired and also bought some lottery tickets.
Luck, however, wasn’t in his favor.
“We were hoping we could both claim at the same time,” he told lottery officials.
The winner told lottery officials she plans to use her winnings toward a car to replace her 23-year-old one.
Odenton is about a 20-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.
