An owl only a few weeks old fell 100 feet from her nest and is now being cared for by a Pennsylvania wildlife rehabilitation center, officials said.

The Tamarack Wildlife Center in Saegertown said in a March 1 post on Facebook that the owl was found “on the ground under her family’s nest” at the Panther Hollow Bridge in Pittsburgh.

The wildlife center, located about 100 miles north from Pittsburgh, took in the injured owl and began to nurse her back to health. Fortunately for the owlet, she only suffered minor injures, mainly to her beak, the center said.

Giving the owl medical attention is not as easy as it is for humans, however.

“Care for the growing bird is provided in a way that prevents associating humans with food, and prevents imprinting on humans- a situation in which the bird identifies humans as its own kind,” the wildlife center said.

The owlet will not be returned to her nest, officials said.

When the owl returns to health, she will not go back to her nest due to its “hazardous location” and the risk of another fall, officials said.

“We will be seeking options to join her to a wild foster family either as a nestling or at the fledgling stage,” according to the group.

The owlet is described as having a “very feisty personality,” but rescuers are optimistic she will make a full recovery.

Tamarack Wildlife Center has cared for numerous injured birds in 2025, but the owlet was its first “youngster” rescue of the year.

In a March 4 Facebook post, the group said it had just returned an owl back to her home after she was struck by a vehicle in December. The owl suffered a concussion and eye injury during the incident, but the group gave her medications and nutritious foods to aid in her healing.
