As a newly married woman watched television, an ad for a new Maryland lottery game appeared on screen.

The commercial was advertising MONOPOLY X50, a scratch-off game that went on sale last month, Maryland Lottery officials said in a Feb. 21 news release.

“Intrigued, she decided to try her luck with the new game,” lottery officials said.

The woman told lottery officials she and her new husband started playing lottery games recently.

Using some prize money from a previous win, the wife bought multiple tickets at a Halethorpe 7-Eleven “before heading home for lunch with her husband,” lottery officials said.

She scratched her tickets and was “stunned;” one ticket had the winning numbers, according to lottery officials.

“Overcome with excitement, she asked her husband to double check the ticket,” lottery officials said.

They checked their ticket using the lottery app and confirmed they had won the game’s top prize of $100,000.

“I could not believe my eyes,” the wife said in the release.

The newlyweds kept their big win a secret until they could visit lottery headquarters to claim their prize.

The couple told lottery officials they plan to spend a portion of the winnings on a new car and tuck away the remainder away in savings.

Halethorpe is about a 10-mile drive southwest from Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
