Man is invited in home to see dogs, then steals and hits resident with car, CT cops say
A Connecticut man left a person’s home with his pockets full of stolen items before hitting the resident, who had welcomed him into the house, with his car, state police said.
The resident later told state troopers that they invited Donovan Rice, 25, inside to see their dogs after he arrived at their door on Feb. 13 in Somers, according to a Feb. 14 Connecticut State Police news release.
They “explained that they and Rice were familiar with each other,” police said.
After the resident stepped outside at some point, they reported seeing Rice leave their home with his pockets filled, according to authorities.
Rice “immediately became defensive” and argumentative when the resident confronted him to ask what was in his pockets, police said.
He got in his car and backed out of the driveway, hitting the resident, who fell down upon being struck by Rice, according to authorities.
Attorney information for Rice wasn’t immediately available Feb. 17.
The resident, who didn’t want to go to a hospital for minor injuries caused by the collision, accused Rice of stealing items worth about $300 from their home, police said.
Rice was arrested at his home in Manchester, about a 15-mile drive southwest from the resident’s town, according to police.
He’s charged with sixth-degree larceny, disorderly conduct, third-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment, authorities said.
Rice was released on a $10,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Rockville Superior Court on Feb. 14, according to state police.
His next court date is set for March 28, records show.
