Powerball player misses jackpot but wins big prize in NC. Where was the ticket sold?
A Powerball player just missed a $59 million jackpot prize — but still scored a big win in North Carolina.
The player bought a ticket that matched all but one number picked in the Jan. 27 drawing, making it worth $50,000, results show.
The winning numbers: white balls 2-40-47-53-55, with red Powerball 20.
So, where was the lucky ticket sold? The winner spent $2 at a Shell gas station in Jacksonville, home to the Camp Lejeune military base and a roughly 120-mile drive southeast from Raleigh, an N.C. Education Lottery spokesperson told McClatchy News via email.
The player is set to get richer after their ticket matched four white balls and the red ball. The winner was one number from hitting the jackpot, which stood at an estimated $59 million the night of the drawing, according to the Powerball website.
Lottery officials shared news about the big win early Jan. 28, before the lucky ticket holder would have had a chance to come forward. In North Carolina, Powerball winners have about six months to cash in on their prizes, rules show.
