Woman turns losing streak around at casino with big win on $5 scratch-off in Maryland
A woman’s birthday trip to a casino on Maryland’s coast started out disappointing, but things took a surprising turn when she tried her luck at the lottery instead.
The player from Virginia started the trip playing games in the Ocean Downs Casino, lottery officials said in a Jan. 27 news release.
After she lost $35, she switched to Maryland Lottery games through vending machines at the casino — and immediately won way more than she’d lost with a $50,000 top prize, officials said.
Her fiancé kept playing the casino’s table games, so she bought a $5 “Game of Thrones” scratch-off because he’s a fan of the TV show, officials said.
“One of the ways to win is to uncover a crossed swords symbol over a dollar amount for a win, and the player knew as soon as she saw that symbol over $50,000 that she’d won big,” officials said. “Or, rather, they had won big.”
The player agreed to split the prize with her fiancé since his fandom had inspired her to buy that game, officials said.
“She allowed the split even though he started loudly announcing the win while she wanted to keep it more low key,” officials said.
She wants to fix up their house with her half of the winnings, officials said.
