An 8-year-old boy and a 39-year-old man who tried to rescue him died after both were swept out to sea off a Northern California beach, state officials and news outlets reported.

The incident took place at Cowell Ranch State Beach near Half Moon Bay at about 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, California State Parks officials said in a news release sent to McClatchy News.

The boy was swept off the beach out to sea and the man entered the water to try to save him, KGO reported. Both were carried away by a rip current.

State parks lifeguards and rescuers from other agencies found the two in the water, but they could not be revived and died at a hospital, parks officials said.

The agency did not specify the relationship between the boy and the man.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to the family for this devastating loss,” officials said.

The National Weather Service issued a beach hazard warning for sneaker waves in the San Francisco Bay Area for Sunday and Monday, KRON reported.

Half Moon Bay is about a 30-mile drive southwest from San Francisco.
