Tenant is fatally shot by his landlord, a former police sergeant, Michigan cops say
A former police sergeant, who is now a landlord, is accused of fatally shooting one of his tenants, Michigan authorities say.
Officers in Detroit responded to a home the afternoon of Tuesday, Dec. 10, for a report of a person shot, Deputy Police Chief Jacqueline Pritchett said in a news briefing streamed by WJBK.
The victim, a man in his 40s, was found with multiple gunshot wounds, police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Police determined the shooting happened during a dispute between a landlord and a tenant.
An “ongoing eviction” is believed to be the root of the dispute, WXYZ reported. The incident culminated in the landlord firing the fatal shots, per police.
The landlord, according to Pritchett, is a former Detroit police sergeant who retired around eight years ago. He was arrested Tuesday, and charges have not been announced as of the morning of Dec. 11.
Pritchett said the shooting happened inside the home, and a weapon was recovered at the scene. The tenant, who has not been publicly identified, was unarmed.
