Mail carrier sold stolen checks, arrow key for groceries and cash in Missouri, feds say
A mail carrier was arrested after Missouri officials said she sold stolen checks and as well as a key that unlocks U.S. Postal Service mail collection boxes.
The 29-year-old Florissant woman was arrested Nov. 7 at a Clayton post office on charges of conspiracy, unlawful use of a mail key and bribery, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri.
She pleaded not guilty, federal officials said. McClatchy News reached out to the woman’s attorney Nov. 8 for comment but did not immediately hear back.
According to officials, on March 20, 2022, the mail carrier accepted money from a man in exchange for her “arrow key,” knowing that he intended to steal mail from collection boxes.
The woman is also accused of stealing checks and selling those checks to the same man, officials said.
The man paid the mail carrier electronically via CashApp and by buying her groceries, indictment records show.
Between March 2022 and August 2023, the mail carrier was paid a total of $3,320 for the stolen checks, court records show.
According to officials, “the conspiracy charge carries a potential penalty of up to 5 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both prison and a fine.”
“The mail key charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years and the bribery charge is punishable by a maximum prison term of 15 years,” per the release.
The man involved pleaded guilty Oct. 25 to bank fraud and aggravated identity theft charges, officials said.
Clayton is about a 10-mile drive west from downtown St. Louis.
