Screams from home lead neighbor to 83-year-old ‘being brutally attacked,’ CA cops say
A man rushed to his 83-year-old neighbor’s rescue after hearing screams coming from her home and finding her “being brutally attacked,” California deputies say.
The man told Monterey County Sheriff deputies he was inside his Pajaro home the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 2, “when he heard screaming from” his neighbor’s home, according to an Oct. 3 Facebook post from the sheriff’s office.
When the man realized one of the voices was his neighbor’s, he decided to check on the woman at her home, deputies said.
There, he found a woman “repeatedly hitting his 83-year-old neighbor in the head with a knife sharpener,” deputies said.
The man pulled the woman off his neighbor and called 911, deputies said.
Deputies arrived at the home and found the 83-year-old woman with “severe head trauma,” according to investigators.
She was taken to a hospital and, following surgery, is in stable condition, deputies said.
The suspect, identified as Schauntel Marina Gomez, 37, was taken into custody and booked into jail on multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse, deputies said.
Gomez is being held on $1,030,000 bail, according to deputies.
Pajaro is about a 100-mile drive southeast from San Francisco.
