Mama dog was ‘willing to do anything’ for her babies. Now, the rescued pups need homes
A mama dog was “willing to do anything” for her babies — and now, the rescued puppies will go up for adoption.
After giving birth in an abandoned home, Muffin the dog helped her three struggling pups get a second chance, according to a North Carolina animal shelter.
“Muffin went to find help,” Brother Wolf Animal Rescue wrote Aug. 30 on Facebook. “A brave mom willing to do anything to save her puppies. She found kind people and led them back to the house, checking to make sure they were still following her every few steps.”
Muffin and her puppies made it to safety and eventually landed at the Asheville-area rescue. The pups were too young for the shelter, so the family settled into a foster home, spokesperson Brooke Fornea told McClatchy News in an email.
The mama and her babies — named Hot Pocket, Toaster Strudel and Uncrustable — are now decompressing after going through a rough patch.
“Muffin was pregnant and alone,” the shelter wrote. “She picked an abandoned house, and had her babies. We have no idea how she survived, and kept 3 of her puppies alive for weeks. She knew they wouldn’t live much longer. They were anemic, covered in fleas, and suffering from heat stroke.”
Though Muffin’s bout of courage led to her family’s rescue, she has more recently become known as a “shy and reserved” dog.
“She has a demure personality and is learning what it is like to live inside a home,” Fornea wrote. “She might need more time in her foster home before she is available for adoption.”
Muffin, set to be in foster care until Sept. 10, will then be spayed. Meanwhile, her nearly 2-month-old pups will be available for adoption starting Sept. 6.
