First responders in Michigan made a grisly discovery after extinguishing a fire in a garage that had exploded, authorities said.

The Monroe County County Sheriff’s Office and multiple firefighting teams responded to the Lambertville home Aug. 12 when multiple 911 callers said a structure had “blown up,” according to a news release.

Deputies found the detached garage of the home was on fire, with evidence suggesting there had been an explosion, the sheriff’s office said.

“After extinguishing the fire, a search of the garage was conducted, which resulted in human remains being located inside of a vehicle parked in the garage,” authorities said.

The remains have not been positively identified as of Tuesday, Aug. 13. The sheriff said the remains were taken to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.

It’s unclear what caused the explosion, and the case remained under investigation by multiple agencies.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 734-240-7530.

Lambertville is about a 60-mile drive southwest from Detroit.
