Street racer struck woman along highway, then left her there to die, Georgia cops say
A woman walking on the shoulder of a Georgia highway in the dark was struck and killed by a street racer, investigators say.
It happened around 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, on Interstate 20 in Atlanta, and the driver left the scene, the Atlanta Police Department said in a news release.
“Officers responded to a fatal collision at the location of I-20 just past Moreland (Avenue). Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive female,” police said.
“Preliminary investigation indicates a black Mustang was racing another vehicle on the interstate and appeared to have struck the victim who was walking on the side of the shoulder. The Mustang did not remain on scene.”
An emergency medical technician declared the woman dead at the scene, officials said.
Her identity has not been revealed as of Aug. 6.
Investigators are working to unravel “the circumstances surrounding the incident,” including why the Mustang strayed from the traffic lanes onto the side of the highway.
Interstate 20 is five lanes in both directions in the area where the crash occurred, maps show. The busy stretch of interstate is just east of downtown Atlanta.
