A 14-year-old boy missing for weeks in Indiana was discovered “safe and well” when authorities executed a search warrant at his parents’ home, Indiana police say.

Now, the teen’s father and mother face criminal charges, Indiana State Police said in a July 3 news release.

Daniel Muir and Kristin Muir, of Logansport, both face obstruction of justice charges, state police said. Daniel Muir, who played for the Indianapolis Colts during part of his 7-year NFL career, is also charged with domestic battery.

Troopers said the couple’s 14-year-old son had last been seen June 16 in Ohio when he left a family member’s home with his mother. The family member, the boy’s grandmother, then called police to report the teen had been abused by his parents, WJW reported.

Officers in Garfield Heights, Ohio, pulled over Kristin Muir, but her son was not in the vehicle, state police said.

Two days later, Cass County Department of Child Services asked police to investigate allegations of domestic battery toward the teen at his home, according to state police.

The 14-year-old and his parents were unable to be located, and a picture shared by police showed the boy with a bruised eye. The teen was believed to be endangered, state police said.

His face was battered. When I got him he had a black eye and busted lip,” the boy’s grandmother, Cheryl Wright told WXIN. “His whole face was swollen. I can only imagine how many times he had been hit in the face for it to be like that.”

Authorities said the Muirs were initially not cooperating in the investigation. They agreed to bring their son to meet with investigators June 28, but they “backed out of the arrangement, which signaled an unwillingness to cooperate,” troopers said.

The case culminated July 3, when the Indiana State Police SWAT team executed search and arrest warrants at the Muir’s home, the release states. The teenager was discovered to be at the home with his parents.

State police said the boy was released to the custody of the Cass County Department of Child Services.
