Kindergartner, mom hit and killed by school bus in crosswalk, New York police say
A kindergarten student and his mother were killed in “tragic accident” involving a school bus in Upstate New York, police say.
It happened at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, June 20, in Mamaroneck, triggering multiple 911 calls, according to the city’s police department.
Investigators said the 6-year-old and his 43-year-old mother were walking to Mamaroneck Avenue School when they both were hit by a school bus. Officers responded and found the mother and child laying in the road.
The bus, which was also headed to Mamaroneck Avenue School, was traveling eastbound and preparing to turn left, authorities said in a news release.
Multiple students and their parents had the walk sign and were within the crosswalk when school bus turned, police said. That’s when the mother and her 6-year-old were hit.
The kindergartner died at the scene, according to authorities. His mom was taken to a hospital for treatment but also died from her injuries.
“The driver of the school bus is cooperating with investigators, and it appears at this time that this incident was a tragic accident,” according to police.
Several students and an aide were on board during the crash, though no one was injured, authorities said. The 68-year-old bus driver hasn’t been charged as of June 20.
Mamaroneck Public Schools addressed the incident in a statement Thursday.
“We know that the death of a child is particularly difficult for other children to process,” officials said, as reported by News12 Westchester. “At this time, we have informed our staff of this incredible loss, and social workers and psychologists are fully deployed at MAS.”
Authorities haven’t publicly identified the victims as of Friday, June 21.
Mamaroneck is about a 30-mile drive northeast from New York City.
