A cyclist stopped when they heard groaning coming from a dark marsh in Washington, fire officials said.

Then they realized the noises were coming from someone trapped inside a crashed vehicle, the Eastside Fire & Rescue posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The cyclist called 911 at about 8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, near Woodinville, fire officials said.

Rescuers said the driver went 20 feet down an embankment and flipped his vehicle. He then became stuck in his car until the cyclist heard him groaning.

He was removed from the vehicle and taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, rescuers said.

It’s not clear how long he was in the vehicle.

Woodinville is about 20 miles northeast of Seattle.

This isn’t the only incident where an injured driver was rescued because someone heard them calling for help.

A driver plunged more than 30 feet down an embankment July 28 in Vernonia, Oregon, McClatchy News reported. Rescuers found her “buried in heavy brush” after her iPhone sent an alert. They could also hear her screaming.

Another driver went 400 feet off a cliff July 21 near Los Angeles, McClatchy News reported. The man’s phone also sent an alert and deputies were able to hear him yelling for help.
