Swimmer in Oregon lake dies after sailboat drifts out of his reach, deputies say
A 24-year-old swimmer died at an Oregon lake after his sailboat drifted away from him, a sheriff’s office said.
Deputies responded to a possible drowning at 7:51 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, at Waldo Lake in the Cascade Mountains, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said.
When rescuers got to the lake, bystanders had pulled the unconscious man from the water, deputies said.
Witnesses performed life-saving measures on the man until authorities arrived. First responders also performed CPR on the man, but he was pronounced dead at the lake, deputies said.
The man was sailing before he went into the water and his boat drifted away, deputies said.
The man’s name has not been released yet.
Waldo Lake is about 75 miles southeast of Eugene.
