Trench collapses, killing construction worker at development site, NC officials say

A construction worker died when a trench collapsed at a residential subdivision development, North Carolina officials said.

First responders from five area agencies responded to the site in Albemarle at around 8:30 a.m. on July 5, and it was determined that this would be a recovery effort, Michael Roark, director of the Stanly County Emergency Services wrote in an email.

The worker was not identified.

Albemarle is about 40 miles east of Charlotte.

There were no other injuries, according to Roark.

OSHA is investigating the incident, according to WTVD.

Between 2011 and 2018, about 166 workers died in trench collapses, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2019, at least 24 workers died working on trenching and excavation projects, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
