A California man was found dead after snorkeling on his vacation in Hawaii, officials told news outlets.

A 45-year-old man from Diamond Bar, California, died in an apparent drowning on Monday, June 27, off of Kaanapali, the Maui Fire Department told Hawaii News Now.

First responders found the man dead on rocks after bystanders called for help at about 5:14 p.m., Maui Now reported.

Bystanders told fire officials they found him face down in the water and brought him to the rocks, according to KITV 4.

He was unresponsive with no pulse when first responders arrived, Hawaii News Now reported.

Fire rescuers performed CPR, but the man did not survive, Maui Now reported.

Officials told KITV 4 there were no signs of head, neck or other trauma on his body.

A swell and high tide made ocean conditions rough at the time, officials told Hawaii News Now. Officials are investigating the incident.
