Teen sisters die in crash with tractor-trailer, Georgia officials say. ‘Tragic loss’
Two sisters, ages 14 and 18, died after a crash on a Georgia highway, officials said.
The older girl was behind the wheel of a Saturn when it turned “into the path of” a tractor-trailer on Tuesday, March 8, the Georgia State Patrol said in a news release.
The Saturn driver and passenger both died of crash-related injuries. State troopers identified them as Desirae Lee Cannon and Haley Cannon, respectively.
“Our hearts are deeply saddened as we mourn the tragic loss of one of our Seniors, Desirae Cannon, and her 8th grade sister, Haley,” Toombs County High School wrote on Facebook. “Please keep their family and friends as well as our schools and our community in your thoughts and prayers during this trying time.”
Georgia State Patrol reported responding to the crash at about 4:15 p.m. The scene was on GA-4, also known as U.S. Highway 1 and roughly 180 miles southeast of Atlanta.
On March 8, a stretch of the highway near Five Points Road was shut down due to a crash but later reopened to traffic, the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post.
State troopers in their news release didn’t share the condition of the semi-truck driver. As of March 10, the wreck was still under investigation.
