Teen carjacks couple and hits victim before losing control of car, Louisiana cops say
A 15-year-old is accused of carjacking a couple at gunpoint before running over one of them as he fled, according to Louisiana police.
Officers arrested the teen in Harahan after he lost control and crashed the couple’s car on Saturday, Feb. 12, authorities said in a news release. The incident happened around 4 p.m. in the 2000 block of Hickory Avenue.
“A 15-year-old reached into a car; the husband was standing outside; the woman was still in the car, and [the teenager] pointed a gun at her and demanded the car,” said Harahan Mayor Timothy Baudier, according to WGNO.
That’s when the teen hopped in the car and put it in reverse, Baudier told the news station.
Officers tried to conduct a traffic stop after they spotted the car in traffic, police said. But the teen kept driving, leading police on a brief chase before losing control of the car.
The teen, who police said lives in New Orleans, was arrested and taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to the release. The owner of the car was also taken to a hospital “due to being run over by the suspect when driving away with the stolen vehicle.”
No other injuries were reported.
A woman was knocked unconscious during a similar carjacking at a Costco in New Orleans in early February, McClatchy News reported. Police said the woman was filling her gas tank when an unknown man slid into the driver’s seat and drove off.
She tried clinging to the car, police said, and was run over.
The suspect in that case has been arrested on several charges, including murder in the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy, Nola.com reported.
Harahan is about 11 miles west of downtown New Orleans.
