Hikers find unresponsive man 11,000 feet up on Arizona mountain, sheriff says
Four hikers found an unresponsive man on Arizona’s tallest mountain, the sheriff’s office said.
The 25-year-old hiker from Maine was discovered at 11,000 feet on the trail around 4:40 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, on Humphreys Peak Trail, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
Authorities said the strangers stayed with the man until rescuers could move him to a better location to be hoisted into a helicopter.
Then he was taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center, the sheriff’s office said.
His medical condition was not known at the time of rescue. Officials have not provided details about his current condition or his identity.
Humphreys Peak is the tallest mountain peak in Arizona with an elevation of 12,633 feet, though the hike begins at 9,200 feet, the U.S. Forest Service wrote.
The trail is steep and strenuous. It’s a 10.7 mile out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of more than 3,000 feet, according to AllTrails.
The peak is about 23 miles north of Flagstaff.
