A 911 call about a stranger spotted in a Bay Point backyard led to the discovery of a missing 87-year-old woman’s body, California sheriff’s officials say.

Adela Dela Pena, who was reported missing Tuesday, Nov. 16, was believed to be found dead in her neighbor’s backyard on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 20, Contra Costa County sheriff’s officials reported on Twitter.

Pena, whom family members said had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, was last seen the night of Nov. 16 at her home, sheriff’s officials said in earlier Twitter posts.

Family members searched for Pena, who was last seen wearing a robe, sweatpants and sandals, but could not find her, officials said.

The two homes are less than a half-mile apart. Bay Point, which has a population of about 23,000, was formerly known as West Pittsburg in the San Francisco Bay Area.

An investigation is ongoing as officials work to confirm the identity of the body.
