14-year-old girl went to deli weeks ago, hasn’t been heard from since, NJ officials say
A 14-year-old girl went to a deli on Oct. 14 and hasn’t been heard from since, officials in New Jersey said.
The FBI has joined the search for Jashyah Moore alongside state and local police after she disappeared following a morning visit to Poppie’s Deli Store in East Orange, the city said in a Nov. 3 news release.
She was last seen wearing a black jacket and boots with khaki pants and is 5 feet, 5 inches tall.
The FBI told McClatchy News it is helping the East Orange Police Department and declined to comment further.
East Orange police referred questions to city hall, which later provided McClatchy News with a statement from the police chief.
“Our police officers are working closely with our partnering agencies, analyzing data and following all tips that may lead us to Jashyah so we can bring her safely home,” East Orange police Chief Phyllis Bindi said in a statement.
“My niece is a Black, Afro-Latina girl, you understand?” Moore’s aunt, Yolanda Moore, told PIX11News. “When you’re’ in a disenfranchised community like East Orange … there’s a lot of, I would say, ignoring of Black little girls.”
Before Jashyah visited Poppie’s Deli Store, she visited U.S. Food Market and returned home to tell her mom, Jamie Moore, she lost the card needed for groceries before going back out, the outlet reported.
Jashyah never returned home, prompting Jamie Moore to alert police of her daughter’s disappearance.
“We are asking for the public’s assistance and we urge anyone with information to contact our Tips Hotline at 973.266.5041,” Bindi said. “All tips may be reported anonymously.”
McClatchy News also reached out to state police for further comment.
