How many people have recovered from coronavirus? Here are the numbers

The coronavirus pandemic has spread to more than 110 countries and killed thousands of people, but thousands more have also recovered.

According to Johns Hopkins University, there are over 127,000 cases globally and more than 4,700 people have died as of March 12.

More than 68,000 people have also recovered from the virus, according to the data. The rest of the 54,000-plus cases are still active.

In the U.S., at least 1,323 people have been infected and 68 people have died, according to Johns Hopkins University. Nine people have recovered.

The recovery rate for people in China is around 80 percent, Newsweek reported.

The World Health Organization said the global mortality rate is 3.4 percent but experts say that the real figure could be lower because some people have mild symptoms and never get diagnosed, The Hill reported.

“I think it’s lower because we are missing mild cases,” said Jennifer Nuzzo, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security told the outlet. “We should be preparing for [the worst] cases, it’s true, but also going out to see what the real number is.”

The WHO says those with mild symptoms usually recover “in about two weeks,” according to The Hill. People who have a “more severe illness” can be sick for up to six weeks.

“The most commonly reported symptoms included fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath, and most patients (80%) experienced mild illness,” WHO said. “Approximately 14 percent experienced severe disease and 5 percent were critically ill.”
