Plane bursts into flames after crashing into house in DC suburb, video shows

A plane crashed into a home in a suburban neighborhood outside Washington, D.C., Sunday. Video from just after the crash shows burning wreckage littering the street.

No one was home when the small plane slammed into the house in New Carrollton, Maryland, at about 3 p.m. Sunday, officials said. The sole person on the plane died in the crash, the fire department said.

A spokesman for Prince George’s County Fire/EMS tweeted: “Small aircraft struck attached carport of single family home then struck automobile with both plane & car catching fire. Small fire in house attic. Home was not occupied. 1 person on plane declared deceased on scene.”

Maryland State Police are leading the investigation. The department said the single-engine plane took off from the College Park Airport minutes before the crash.

“The pilot, whose identification is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, is the one confirmed fatality at this time,” state police said.

The plane was a Grumman American AA-5, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB are helping with the investigation.
