Update: 16-year-old motorcyclist dies in US 501 crash. Closed lanes blocked traffic for hours
A 16-year-old motorcyclist was killed Monday in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 501 near Conway.
Jaken Gore was identified as the driver of the motorcycle by the Horry County Coroner’s Office.
It appears that Gore was a student at PALM Charter High School, a motorsports school in the Myrtle Beach area, according to Gore’s Facebook page.
The crash resulted in lanes of U.S. 501 being closed and traffic being backed up for several hours as police and rescue crews worked at the scene. Crews also worked to clean up a fuel spill from the crash, according to Horry County Fire Rescue on Facebook.
The accident happened at 3:21 p.m. on U.S. 501 and Amber Lane, according to Lance Cpl. Lena Butler with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The driver of a 2009 Ford F-250 pickup truck was attempting to make a left turn onto northbound 501 when the truck was hit by the driver of a 1996 Suzuki motorcycle, Butler said in a press release. The driver of the pickup was not injured.
The driver of the motorcycle died on scene, Butler said.
Motorists reported sitting in traffic for several hours. It appears that lanes of traffic were blocked until nearly 7 p.m., according to a post by the South Carolina Department of Transportation on X, formerly known as Twitter.
